First up for the night was Todrick Hall, the 34 year old dancer from Arlington, TX. He chose to sing Kelly Clarkson’s “Since You Been
Gone” and I kind of liked his random arrangement, even though he was off-key a few times. He seemed very comfortable on stage and it was a good
way to open the show. Ellen said that she liked what he did with the song aside from the chorus. She said that it wasn’t the best singing but
liked that he took a chance with the song. Randy said that he’s a fan of his but because he changed the arrangement so much, it didn’t
even sound like the same song. He advised that you don’t want to change a song enough that it is unrecognizable. Kara said that he’s an
undeniable performer. Simon said that he seemed like a dancer trying to sing rather than other way around and that he “murdered” the
original song. Ouch. Didn’t expect such harsh words from Simon on this one. Up next was 16 year old high school student Aaron Kelly from
Sonestown, PA. He took a shot at Rascal Flatts “Here Comes Goodbye” and personally, I thought his performance was boring. I don’t
think he sang the song that well and there was nothing really special about the performance. This kid really needs to gain some confidence! Simon said
the same thing about confidence but also that the performance was good (hmm, okay Simon). He was pretty sure he’d make it through to next week.
Kara said she loves that he has no idea how good his talent is and thinks we’ll see incredible things from him. Was I listening to the same
performance? I was totally not on the same page with the judges. Randy thought it was a little but he’s a fan of him and his voice. Ellen said
he’ll be on the show for a long time and loves how humble he is. I’m not sure why the judges love this kid, but I will agree
slightly– he seems pretty genuine. 27 year old Jermaine Sellers is a church singer from Joliet, IL. He sang “Get Here” by
Alita Adams, which is a song that I actually have never heard of. I really didn’t like the song choice for him and thought that he sounded off.
Parts of the song he sounded good, but most of the song was really awful. Ellen said that she’s a fan of his and loves his look, but really felt
like he pushed the song too much. Randy said that it was a weird song choice for him and would think he could sing something by Maxwell or Neyo
(agreed!). Kara said the performance felt old and that if he’s going to do that many runs in a song, he needs to try and make them more
meaningful. Simon thought that he was screaming throughout the song and it was way too over the top. He thinks that he blew his opportunity with his
performance, but Ellen thinks it wasn’t bad enough for that to happen. I’m with Simon on this one – I really was not a fan of this
performance. Last minute replacement Tim Urban is a 20 year old student from Duncanville, TX. He sang “Apologize” by One Republic
and he certainly cannot sing the high notes! Some of the song was okay but that’s about it. Simon said congrats for being back on the show but
that they made the right decision when they did not put him through to the Top 24 initially (OUCH). He has weak vocals and didn’t seem like a
natural performer. Kara said the music overpowered him, but thinks that he’s cute and a current singer. Randy said that it was the wrong song
choice and he doesn’t have the falsetto to sing that kind of song. Ellen said that as well, but if the sound was down and we saw him that the
performance was adorable. Eh, Tim might need to be sent home this week. Joe Munoz, the 20 year old from Huntington Park, CA was up next. He
chose to sing “You and I Both by Jason Mraz and I love this song (huge Mraz fan over here!). I actually think he did a pretty good job,
especially compared to those that went before him. His vocals were off a couple times but he was very confident on stage. I think he was the best so
far. Ellen said that he’s comfortable on stage and really liked the performance. Randy said that it wasn’t quite the perfect song choice
for him but that he has a great voice and did a good job. Kara liked his random song choice and though he had issues with the chorus, he’s the
best so far in terms of vocals. Simon said that it was a safe and forgettable performance that didn’t show his potential to be a star. I thought
Joe was surprisingly good! Next up was 20 year old Tyler Crady from Nazareth. He sang “American Woman” and I kinda like his weird
style of performing and the rocker vibe that he has going on. I think he needs to show off his vocals more though. Simon said that people will
remember that performance, but for the wrong reasons. He comes over as someone that’s pretending to be a rockstar rather than actually being
one. Kara said that he needs to add something original to his 70s vibe. Randy thought the performance was style over substance. Ellen agreed with him
mimicking the 70s styles without making it feel real. He needs to work on his singing. I thought they were a little harsh on Tyler. I’m a fan of
his. Following Tyler was 23 year old Lee Dewyze from Chicago, IL. He sang “Chasing Cars” by Snow Patrol and I really enjoyed his
low rocker voice. I don’t think he’s the strongest singer though. Ellen thought it was a good song choice even though he did scream a
little. She really loves the tone of his voice and thinks he should stay to next week. Randy said that he disagreed – he didn’t like the
song choice for him and suggested singing Kings of Leon. He does like his voice though. Kere said that the song was unrecognizable at parts and
suggested him singing Bad Company. Simon said it was the best performance so far by a mile because he’s a naturally good singer (agreed). He
thinks he’ll do well in the competition and I totally agree with that too! John Park is the 21 year old student from Northbrook, IL. He
sang “God Bless The Child” and I really didn’t like his performance, thought I did think the second verse was much better than the
first. I thought he was entertaining with his opening interview as well. Simon said that he sounded flat and showed zero emotion. It also didn’t
show the judges the kind of artist that he’d be. Kara agreed – he has a big voice but there was no connection in the song. Randy said the
bridge was good but again, wrong song choice. Ellen said that she’s unsure why he picked that song but actually liked the performance and hopes
people vote for him to come back next week. 26 year old Michael Lynche is a personal trainer from St. Petersburg, FL. He took a shot at
“This Love” by Maroon 5 and he was one of my favorites of the night. I thought it was a good vocal and I liked the song choice for him.
Ellen said that he has so much personality and loves that about him. Randy really likes him and thought that he brought energy into the room. Kara
said that it wasn’t great but it was good. She loves that he’s comfortable with himself, but should work on challenging himself more.
Simon said that he was like the supporting act before the main act. He thinks that he can do better than that. I think that he can show us some more
of what he has to offer as well. Alex Lambert is a 19 year old student from North Richland Hills, TX. He sang “Wonderful World” by
James Morrison and I really really like the tone of his voice. This guy really needs to work on his confidence though. The performance was just okay,
but his voice is very unique sounding. Simon said it was the most uncomfortable performance of the night (agreed). This guy has a good voice but he
needs to get his nerves together. Kara said he sounds so much like James Morrison and has great potential. Randy really likes him as well and hopes
that he stays in the competition. Ellen said she likes him and his mullet. She compared him to a banana, saying that sometimes they’re good but
not quite ripe enough yet. Ellen is definitely bringing comedy to the Idol scene and I’m loving that! Up next was 27 year old Casey
James from Fort Worth, TX – the contestant that Kara seems to have a little crush on. He sang “Heaven” and was clearly the best of
the night so far. I could personally hear that performance right now on the radio. Kara thought it was a little pitchy and mentioned that he’s
not only eye candy but ear candy. Ellen said that he sounded great and thinks he’ll get votes like crazy (agreed!). Randy really likes him and
thought it was a great song choice. Simon said that both of them are cursed with good looks (ohhhhh Simon). He also said that he chose the right song
and it was an honest, sincere performance. The entire time the judges were messing with Kara because of her supposed crush and Simon called her a
cougar. This was pretty entertaining, I have to say. Last up in the glorified “pimp spot” was 24 year old Andrew Garcia from
Moreno CA. I was really looking forward to him because of how awesome his “Straight Up” performance was during Hollywood Week. He sang
“Suger We’re Goin Down” by Fall Out Boy and I really liked his performance. His vocals were good and he was for sure one of the best
of the night. Still, I thought he’d be even better than he was. Simon agreed – he had been looking forward to hearing him all night but
was disappointed because it wasn’t original enough and was too serious of a performance. However, he gave him many compliments, saying that
he’s a nice guy and has a fantastic recording voice. Randy thought the arrangement of the song was strange but is a fan of his. Ellen said that
his “Straight Up” performance will carry him for awhile and is also a fan of his. Kara also likes him and wants him to take more risks
with his performances. Alright, so I’m really unsure on how the voting will go tonight because I think so many of the guys were
mediocre. Personally, I thought Tim, Jermaine and John were my least favorite performances. My favorites were Joe, Lee, Casey and Andrew. Tune in
tonight to see which 2 girls and guys are cut from the competition!
