Tonight on Idol the girls were scheduled to perform, but apparently Crystal had to go to the hospital earlier today. Per her doctor, she wasn’t
allowed to perform tonight, so the girls will perform tomorrow and the guys will entertain us tonight. According to Simon, the girls are doing
slightly better than the guys so far, and I agree. Let’s hope the guys kick it up a notch tonight. Starting off the show was Michael
Lynche, who did well last week and seems to have a following since he was shown so much during auditions. He chose to sing “This is a
Man’s World” by James Brown and really did what he needed to do to start the night off in the right direction. He made the song his own
and got into the entire performance. I thought his vocals were better than last week too. Randy didn’t even know what to say to him and gave him
a standing ovation. Ellen liked the song choice and that everyone else is going to have to try and top that performance tonight. Kara said he changed
from a singer into someone that could potentially be a great artist. Simon said that he changed from “a pussycat to a lion in one week”,
saying that he picked the right song and it was his best performance in the competition so far. Totally agree – way to go Michael! John
Park said that he was going to focus on honest singing this week during his pre-performance interview. He sang “Gravity” by John Mayer and
I wasn’t a fan. I thought it was pitchy and that it wasn’t the right song choice for his voice. I also don’t like that he
doesn’t have any facial expressions on his face when he performs. Randy said that he didn’t bring anything new to the song and it
wasn’t as good as the original (agreed – he’s no Mayer!) Ellen thought it was a better song choice than last week, but that he could
have had more soul in the performance. He needs to work on feeling the songs he sings more. Kara thought it was better than last week (agreed), but he
lacks I connecting with the audience when he sings (agreed – they’re reading my mind tonight!) Simon thinks he’ll go home this week
(yep, right again, Simon). It was better than last week, but forgettable and not believable. Ah, sounds like John’s time on the show has run its
course. Up next was Casey James, who sang “I Don’t Wanna Be” by Gavin DeGraw, a song that has been sung in previous seasons
several times. I really was expecting him to be spectacular at the song, but he really wasn’t. First of all, his guitar playing was awesome,
hands down. But I didn’t think it was his best vocal performance and I think he can do better than that. Randy agreed with me about the vocals
but loved the guitar and thought that this was the type of artist that he’d be. Ellen thought he sounded great, but there’s stiffness
about him on stage. Kara, who has been a consistent fan of Casey’s, thought that he took 2 steps back this week. She thought his notes were off
and that he didn’t take the song to another level. Simon somewhat agreed with Kara, because last week he stood out, and this week he seems like
someone that’s trying to be a rock star. Yeah, I don’t know what happened, but Casey needs to step it up next week for sure. Alex
Lambert sang “Everybody Knows” by John Legend and seemed much more comfortable this week on stage, possibly due to playing his guitar. I
was really impressed with his performance! I actually really liked it and just adore the tone of his voice. I think it was an authentic performance
that he really needed to give tonight. That was such an improvement from last week! Randy agreed with this and really enjoyed his performance. Ellen
thought he was much more confident and better this week. She thinks he’s the most unique out of all the contestants (I’d say one of the
most, not necessary THE most). Kara said that he has people rooting for him and that he has such a great recording voice. Simon said that it was a
million times better than last week’s performance and that he has no need to be nervous. Now he just needs to start believing that he has a
chance to do well in the competition. True story – Alex seems like one of the real, genuine artists that just needs to find
himself. Following Alex was Todrick Hall, who tried to sing “What’s Love Got to do with it” by Tina Turner. Once again, he
changed a song entirely too much and honestly, I didn’t even recognize it until the course. I just don’t think he’s special and his
voice isn’t all that great either. Randy didn’t love it and suggested that he just sings a song without changing it because the guy can
sing (good advice Randy!). Ellen thought it was the wrong song to sing but does like him. Kara also likes him, but mentioned how his first audition
was the best they’ve ever seen him perform (true – when he sang his personal song, it was catchy and unique. He hasn’t shown that
since then). Simon said that things just aren’t working out for him and it’s something that he’d see at a theme park. Yeah, I
don’t know about Todrick..seems like he’s not sure of the kind of artist he wants to be and keeps trying to impress rather than just be
himself. Up next was Jermaine Sellers, another performer that I wasn’t a fan of last week but miraculously made it to this week. He sang
“What’s Goin On” by Marvin Gaye, which is such a classic song that he should have known he couldn’t touch. However, the song
choice was decent because it did fit the tone of his voice well. I thought he improved from last week and even enjoyed parts of his performance. Randy
said it was better than his last performance, but it wasn’t great. Ellen likes his style, but the performance didn’t work for her. She
thinks he keeps pushing too hard when he sings (yeah, I can see that). Kara said that he’s always doing too much with the songs. He needs to
look at the meaning of the songs so it doesn’t feel so forced. Simon said that the judges are frustrated because he’s making songs lose
importance. Andrew Garcia chose to sing “You Give Me Something” by James Morrision and I didn’t like his song choice. I
really think he can do better than his performance tonight. Randy said it was pitchy all over and thinks he’s way better than that. He sees him
as an artist like Jason Mraz (agreed and HUGE Mraz fan – Andrew could go in that direction). Ellen disagreed with Randy, saying that it was a
little pitchy but the problem is that he set the bar for himself so high for his “Straight Up” performance that he somehow just needs to
find a way to top it (you nailed it, Ellen!). Kara agreed with Ellen, saying that she likes him but that he’s been going downhill since that
performance. She does see potential in him. Simon was frustrated because he hasn’t chosen the right song 2 weeks in a row and thinks that he can
do better than that. Yeah, Andrew really set himself on a pedestal with his Paula Abdul performance, so he really has to find a way to stand out like
that again. I still think he’s a crowd favorite, but he can easily blend in the crowd if he doesn’t shape up. Following Andrew was
Aaron Kelly, who sang “My Girl” by The Temptations. I thought he was much more confident on stage than last week. He hit some good notes
but it was also pitchy. Randy thought the first part of the song was great but the ending wasn’t. Even so, he was 200% better than last week.
Ellen thought he was more comfortable on stage and used it well. She liked his song choice too. Kara liked the performance and likes him. She enjoys
that he’s a consistent performer. Simon didn’t like the song and thought that he took a step backwards. He needs to figure out the kind of
artist he wants to be, but then Kara stepped in, saying that he did his own version of the song. Hmm. Personally, I don’t see anything special
about Aaron. This is 2 weeks in a row where I feel like he hasn’t stood out, though he did improve this week. Next up was Tim Urban, who
wanted to sing “Come on Get High” by Matt Nathanson. Honestly, this is the only time that I’ve ever liked Tim. I have been ripping
on him all season, but tonight, I was a fan. I really like that song and thought that it suited his voice well. It was a thousand times better than
last week and seems like more of a real performance. The judges, however, seemed to disagree with me. Randy thought there wasn’t anything
special about it, it was pitchy and he just didn’t get it. Ellen asked him if he can act because he has no stage presence when he sings but
he’s adorable and would be a good fit for something like the show Glee. Kara liked the song choice, but he didn’t make it his own. She
thinks he looks the part but that it’s not all there yet. Simon actually disagreed with the other 3, thinking that it was a clear improvement
from last week. He was impressed that he listened to the criticism, chose a younger song, and liked his attitude and performance. I really have to
agree with Simon. Though I’ve been a hater, tonight he’s one of my favs. The final “pimp spot” performance was given
by Lee Dewyze, who sang “Lips of an Angel” by Hinder. I LOVE Lee’s voice and pretty much fell in love with him. He is, by far, my
favorite guy contestant. The judges all seem to love him too. They thought that he was commercial and Simon said that he could be the one to beat. I
definitely agree – best guy on the show this year for sure. Okay, so I was way off with guessing who went home last week. My favorites
tonight were Michael, Alex, Tim and Lee – clearly, my opinions have changed from last week to this week! And I think John and Todrick will be
the ones going home this week. We’ll have to wait and see what happens on Thursday. In the meantime, the girls are up tomorrow to show off their
chops. Tune in to see if anyone has improved or gotten worse since last week. You never know with this show!
