Tonight on Idol, the girls should have been well-prepared for their performances, particularly due to having an extra day to rehearse! I was hoping
for some stellar performances tonight. The show started with Ryan and Crystal talking about how she was much better after yesterday and ready to
perform. I’m unsure what exactly happened with her, but glad to see that she’s ready to perform tonight. She opened the show with as
“Long as I Can See the Light” by Creedence Clearwater and was just fabulous. She’s original and has such a pure voice. I was very
happy for her because I think it was an improvement from last week. Randy loves that she knows who she is and loves her. Ellen said that it was pure
natural talent and nothing about her performance was forced. Kara said she did better than last week and was effortless. She plays from her heart and
Kara thought she hit a new level of talent tonight. Simon said he underestimated her last week because tonight she had an incredible vocal and thinks
that they have a serious artist with her. He also brought up noticing Kelly Clarkson standing out at this point in the competition. The judges are all
right – Crystal is raw talent. It’s random and awesome that she tried out for Idol and is definitely a front-runner. Following
Crystal’s awesomeness was Haeley Vaughn, who in no way would have been able to top Crystal’s performance. When she said she was singing
“The Climb” by Miley Cyrus, I thought that it was possibly a good choice for her voice. WRONG. I don’t think I’ve ever been so
annoyed with a contestant before. I really felt like it was a karaoke performance. Randy thought it was excruciating, pitchy, and it didn’t work
for him. Ellen told her to never stop smiling because she’s adorable (maybe this would be true if she wasn’t annoying), but agreed with
Randy and that she failed to connect with the song. Kara thinks people are rooting for her (WHO?), but that she needs about a year of strengthening
her voice. Simon agrees that it was an “utter mess”. He said that in theory, it should have worked, but it just didn’t. Look, I can
see how there are slight times when her voice sounds alright, but the rest of it is so bad that it crushes anything positive about her as a performer.
Do you think she can make it through another week? Lacey Brown took Kara’s advice from last week and sang “Kiss Me” by Six
Pence None the Richer”. I just think this girl is too cute for words. She seemed like she had fun with the song and it really was a good fit for
her voice. I thought it was way better than last week. Randy also liked the song choice, but that it was slightly a karaoke performance because she
didn’t really bring anything original to it. Ellen said that she didn’t change it up, but thought it was adorable and that she likes her.
Kara said thought they were losing her special tone last week and it was brought back with this song. Now she needs to step it up and start making
things her own. Simon thought it was a little better than last week, but that the audience won’t remember it. She needs to show off the kind of
artist she is. He compared her to Crystal in how different their performances were tonight. Yeah, I think Lacey just needs to go all out on the stage
and put her heart into her performances. I know she doesn’t have the best voice out of the girl, but I think she does have something
special. Up next was Katie Stevens, who also listened to the judge’s advice by choosing a younger song to perform this week. She sang
“Put Your Records On” by Corinne Bailey Rae and it was a great song choice. She sounded awesome and I definitely liked it better than last
week. Randy thought there were bright moments in the performance and particularly likes her upper register. He also thought it was pitchy at times and
thinks that she can tackle bigger songs with her big voice. Ellen thinks she has a great voice, but still wants her to perform a younger song. She
doesn’t want to hear something that she could hear in her dentist office. Kara agreed with Ellen and is pulling for her. Simon said it’s
frustrating because she did take their notes, but it still doesn’t show them the type of artist she’d be. He does think she’ll make
it back next week. Kara said she should pick something revolving around however she feels next week and Randy said pick an artist under 20 to sing.
Katie has great potential, she just needs to find her niche and she’ll be golden. Following Katie was Didi Benami, who also tried to
change it up by singing “Lean On M” by Bill Withers”. You know what? I kind of liked the change for her. I thought she tried to make
it her own and she’s pretty adorable too. Randy said that he wouldn’t have chosen that soul song for her and didn’t think it worked.
Ellen loves her voice and thinks she has a great presence. She also applauded her for trying to make the song her own, but didn’t think it was
the right song for her. Kara thought it wasn’t good at all and she’s lacking in consistency. She’s lost her uniqueness in her voice.
Simon thought it was all over the place and that it was a wasted opportunity. The poor thing almost started crying and couldn’t even chat with
Ryan after the performance. I understand what the judges are saying. At this stage in the game, they need to be signing things that they’d
record, not just sing for fun. They can sing fun songs in later rounds, but right now they have to show what they have to offer, and Didi is having
trouble doing this. Michelle Delamor didn’t stand out for me last week at all, but surprised me tonight with her song choice in
“With Arms Wide Open” by Creed. I never would have thought she’d pick a song like that, but she took a risk. I thought she looked
great and the first part of the song was gorgeous. I wasn’t thrilled about the second half of the song though. Randy said that it was pitchy and
that she didn’t do enough with the song, but that her outfit is hot. Ellen thought she looked fabulous and that she did do a lot with the song.
She had moments as well as being pitchy, but she did try to do something different and liked that about her. It was Kara’s favorite performance
of Michelle’s so far in the competition. Even though it wasn’t technically perfect, it felt believable. She also had a good attitude about
her feedback last week and Kara appreciates that she’s trying. Simon kind of agreed with Kara. The first half of the song was stronger, but she
didn’t choose a safe song, attempted to make it her own, and got it about 80% right. Randy thinks she for sure deserves to stay for another week
and I agree! She really impressed me tonight and I think she’s willing to take more risks and see what she can do in the competition.
After Michelle performed, Lilly Scott sang “A Change Is Gonna Come” from Sam Cooke. I thought that parts of the performance were good,
but personally liked last week’s performance better. I thought she was trying too hard at times. Even so, I’m a fan of hers and respect
her individuality. It was Randy’s favorite performance of the night so far as well as Ellen’s. Ellen says she has “it”. Kara
said she just had her first moment in the competition and is glad that she is a mismatch in the competition. Simon agreed with me. He thought it was
good, but like last week’s better and that she over-sang it slightly. Lilly is for sure one of the top girls, and as long as she stays true to
herself, she’ll sail through week after week in the competition. Katelyn Epperly was next, singing “The Scientist” by
Coldplay and playing the piano for the first time on Idol. I thought it was such an honest performance and it was lovely. She was my favorite of the
night so far. The judges didn’t seem as wowed as I was. Randy said that he really liked, but thought it was slow at times. He did like that she
played the piano too. Ellen said it was a slow and sleepy performance. Kara sort of disagreed, saying that she kind of loves her and her incredible
voice. She’s not consistent with her song choices yet and needs to figure out who she is. Simon said it was almost identical to the Natasha
Beddingfield version, eve though she claimed she never heard that version before. Even so, he thought it was a smart song choice because it made her
contemporary. He thinks she’s a little corny when she performs but it was a million times better than last week and it put her back in the race.
Well I’ve liked her 2 weeks in a row and I think she’s got something special going on. I think we’ll start to see her grow on the
show. Up next was Paige Miles, who took on “Walk Away” by Kelly Clarkson. I liked the song choice for her but thought she was a
little pitch. Randy liked it, but wasn’t sure if it was the best song choice. He wants to hear her sing a bigger song. Ellen disagreed with
Randy and really loved it. She likes her great energy and that she made it her own. Kara said that she didn’t connect with the song because she
was smiling when she should have been a little angrier due to the lyrics (since she wrote the song, she’d obviously know). Simon thought that
she chose the wrong song 2 weeks in a row and that she’s getting lost in the songs. She needs to pick a good song and nail it. Paige isn’t
my favorite contestant, but she has promising talent if she learns how to pick the right songs for her. Tonight’s show ended with
Siobhan Magnus in the pimp spot singing “Think” by Aretha Franklin. All I can say is wow! She’s a little weird but has a crazy
voice. She hit some intense notes that reminded me of Adam Lambert last season. Randy thought the performance was dope and loved it. Ellen loved it
too and that she took on a big song. Kara couldn’t believe the crazy high note that she hit. Simon said she’s strange but in a good way.
He thought parts of the song were terrible and some were incredible. She’s a talented and interesting person. Sounds like the judges just
aren’t sure of what to make of her yet and I agree! There’s some serious talent in this girl. My clear favorites tonight were
Crystal, Katelyn and Siobhan. It’s tough to call who will go home. I absolutely want Haeley to go home, but aside from her, it’s up in the
air. Maybe Paige? Lacey? Didi? I think it could be any of those girls due to their feedback. We’ll have to see what happens tomorrow night, when
2 more guys and 2 more girls leave the competition, bring us to our Top 16!
